Much has been written about the negative/positive effects of fish oils or Omega 3s. In fact, there is so much information out there that we wouldn’t blame you if you freely admitted that you had given up on fish oils altogether because you didn’t actually know if they are good or bad for you! So, we decided to do a little research about the pros and cons of this much-talked-about nutrient so that you can make up your own mind.
What makes up Omega 3s?
Fish oils, or omega 3 fatty acids, are made up of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as well as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Our bodies are unable to manufacture omega 3s, which is why we need to take in a sufficient amount of fish oils on a daily basis.
In what foods can I find Omega 3s?
You can find Omega 3s in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. But – contrary to what the name suggests – fish oils can also be found in sources other than fish, for example as flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds.
Why would I need to take an Omega 3 supplement?
The benefits of consuming a sufficient amount of fish oils are numerous. Fish oils have been proven to play an important role in – for example – brain functioning as well as the development of eyes and nerves in children. Research also shows that omega 3s may play a role in preventing cardiovascular disease, some types of cancers, alleviating mood disorders as well as the symptoms of arthritis. If you don’t consume enough fish oils in your diet, it is highly recommended that you consider taking an omega 3 supplement.
Are there any drawbacks to taking fish oils?
Experts suggest that higher-than-necessary levels of DHA and EPA (the building blocks of Omega 3s) may lead to certain negative consequences, such as an increased risk of bleeding, high cholesterol and blood sugar problems.
Everyone is different and, as such, nutritional needs differ from one person to the next. Instead of crumbling under the weight of all the literature, on Omega 3s, out there we would suggest that you consult a professional about what you really need to be taking.
